New York open studio

New York Open Studio, October 2011

I had a residency in New York last year funded by the Ian Potter Cultural Trust and The Dame Joan Sutherland Fund. The residency was at PointB, an amazing space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. My project involved researching esoteric movements and their representations in popular culture. I projected images that I had collected relating to esoterica and the city of New York. This included references to the films of Roman Polanski ('Rosemary's Baby' where the exterior shots of the apartment are images of the Dakota building - also where John Lennon was shot in 1980), spirit photographs of William Mumler and images of the Lamasery where Madame Blavatsky wrote 'Isis Unveiled'. You can see the archive of images on my tumblr produced during the residency. http://farewellspromises.tumblr.com/

An old photograph of a nurse purchased at 'Yesterday's News' in Carroll Gardens. I painted symbols relating to freemasonry on her face.

The lovely Karin Lansoo and Neeme Raud interviewed me rather spontaneously. I ended up on the Estonian evening news, in a segment about occupy Wall Street!!
